The investigation of the "Circle" continues. Net 286 Gazette had
planned to publish it's findings in this issue, but the scope of what
we found is so huge that we need more time to check out all the
sources and verify the story. Let me just say this - if our sources
check out, Mr. Buchanan, Mr. Collins, and Mr. Richards could be
spending some time behind bars.
Net 286 Gazette will present the ENTIRE story in an upcoming
issue. And we know you will be shocked when you see what these
criminals have done.
On a cheerier note, things are moving along at a rapid pace in
the computer world. The 3DO is coming and it looks like a real
contender for the mass multimedia entertainment market. Keep your eye
on this one folks.

Weekly Happenings in the Computer World
By: C. Brown
ANOTHER VIDEO GAME CONTENDER - It is rumored that 3DO Co. will soon
move into the video game market. Sources say that 3DO's Interactive
Multiplayer unit is, "faster and more powerful than game machines now on
the market". Much attention has been focused on the 3DO system "because
of its ability to combine video, audio, text and graphics."
One problem that the 3DO system has to overcome is the few games that
will be available for it through Christmas. Sources say that "customer
decisions on machine purchases usually are based on what games can be
played on those machines ... and so far, the software selection for 3DO
is slim."
The manufacturer says 10 to 20 games will be available for Christmas
sales, though more than 150 games are under development.
PEN COMPUTER OFFERS WIRELESS NETWORKING CAPABILITIES - Fujitsu Per-
sonal Systems Inc. has announced the PadPlus RF, one of the industry's
first mobile computers with fully-integrated wireless communications
technology. The PadPlus RF is a pen-based mobile computer that allows
transparent wireless client/server and peer-to-peer LAN communications.
The PadPlus RF incorporates Proxim Inc.'s RangeLAN wireless adapter
and radio into its enclosed housing, with a retractable antenna in the
upper left corner. The PadPlus RF has the same form-factor and func-
tionality as the PoqetPad Plus.
The PadPlus RF features a communications range of up to 300 feet with
interference immunity made possible by the spread spectrum technology.
The PadPlus RF has a burst data rate of 242Kbps and provides users with
three full channels. With error correcting hardware and firmware desig-
ned to retransmit undelivered data, users will be sure that data is
never lost or corrupted.
The PadPlus RF is available immediately through FPSI systems
integrators and VARs. Preliminary pricing for the PadPlus RF is $2,449.
HP CUTS VECTRA PRICES - Word from Los Angeles is Hewlett-Packard Co.
is cutting prices of selected Vectra personal computers by up to 14%.
APPLE BIG IN ASIA-PACIFIC - Apple Computer Inc.'s bottom line is
being given a boost by a tremendous boom in the personal computer market
in Asia, according to a top company executive. Reports say that sales
of the major Macintosh and PowerBook product lines are higher than the
rate of market growth.
"Our Asia-Pacific business is growing at a rate of around 50 percent"
annually, said Randy Battat, vice president of Apple's Macintosh desktop
and PowerBook division.
IBM AND PHILIPS UNVEIL OPTICAL DISK DRIVE - Philips Electronics NV
and IBM Corp. announced they have formed a joint venture to develop
affordably-priced optical disk drives for the computer market. The 3.5-
inch IBM MTA-3127 optical disk drive is the first in a series of
products aimed at a market for small, high-capacity drives.
"We are aiming at a very big market share, by far the biggest," said
Philips spokesman Jack Reemers. He explained the disk drive market is
currently worth $250 million annually, but forecasts it will grow
rapidly to more than $1 billion.
INTEL CORP. ANNOUNCES '386 CHIP FOR EMBEDDED PROCESSING MARKET - A
new line of '386 chips intended for the embedded processing market will
be available in volume in the second quarter of next year, Intel Corp.
says.
The embedded market includes microwave ovens, consumer electronics,
copiers, facsimile machines, telecommunications and other devices in
which the tasks are more limited than those of microchip-based PCs.
NEW CHIP SPEEDS UP GRAPHICS PROCESSING 30 TIMES - Samples of chips
that are said to process graphics 30 times faster than current tech-
nology are being sold in samples by Toshiba Corp.
Toshiba officials said the LSI (large-scale integration) chip is
capable of processing 150,000 polygons -- the basic building blocks of
computer graphics -- per second, compared with 5,000 per second for
computer graphics workstations now on the market.
FUJITSU AND HYUNDAI TO JOINTLY PRODUCE CHIPS - Fujitsu and Hyundai
Electronic Industries Co. announced they will jointly produce computer
memory chips. Manufacturing will take place in the Hyundai factory in
Inchon, South Korea, as well as in Fujitsu's plants in northern Japan
and Gresham, Ore. The two companies also said they are considering
jointly developing more advanced chips.
APPLE DENIES TEXAS MOVE IS IN THE WORKS - Apple Computer is once
again denying rumors that say the firm will move some of its operations
to Austin, Texas. The company did say, however, that it was planning on
moving some of its operations out of California's Silicon Valley.
MEGAHERTZ CUTS MODEM COSTS - Megahertz Corp. has reduced prices by as
much as 38% on its PCMCIA (Personal Computer Memory Card International
Association) modems. The price reductions include those on modems with
the company's patented XJACK connector system.
Those reduced in price range from the XJ1144 14,400/14,400bps data/
fax w/XJACK (reduced to $399 from $599) to the CC324FM 2400/9600bps
data/fax (to $239 from $379).
ASTRONAUTS TO TEST COMPUTER - The helpfulness of an "intelligent"
computer called the Astronaut Science Advisor is to be tested later this
month on the next space shuttle mission. The system was designed "to
help space travelers increase their productivity and improve the
scientific quality of data they collect".
Experts at NASA's Ames Research Center in Mountain View, Calif., say
that the computer has four major functions:
-:- Diagnosis and trouble-shooting of experiment equipment.
-:- Data collection.
-:- Management of experimental procedures.
-:- Detection of "interesting" information.
"Scientists hope the nonhuman assistant will enhance the crew's abi-
lity to perform science experiments and reduce reliance on air-to-ground
communications," sources said. "If it does, it can play a critical part
on longer missions and the space station."
NO JAIL TIME FOR 'NASA CRACKER' -- An Australian computerist who
authorities say shut down some NASA computers for 24 hours in a 1990
system intrusion has avoided jail time.
In Melbourne, the 22-year-old Nahshon Even-Chaim was sentenced to 12
months' jail but was freed immediately by the judge on a good behavior
bond.
Judge Anthony Smith warned Even-Chaim, who was known in his
underground computing circles as "Friend," that he may have to serve the
sentence if he breached the $1,000 bond over the coming year. Smith also
ordered Even-Chaim to carry out 500 hours of unpaid community work over
the next two years.
WORDPERFECT CORP. SETTLES SUITS - WordPerfect Corp. says it has set-
tled lawsuits against a Canadian bulletin board system operator and a
Texas beta-tester it accused of illegally copying and distributing beta
versions of its new WordPerfect 6.0 word processor.
A statement from the company says the software was first found on a
BBS called "California Dreamin" located in Toronto. It was then traced
to a beta-tester in Texas, the company said.
"Under court authority," says the statement, "U.S. marshals and Royal
Canadian Mounted Police, together with company representatives, con-
fiscated computer equipment and unauthorized copies of the program from
the electronic bulletin board operator and from the beta-test site."
This was WordPerfect Corp.'s first direct action against a beta-
tester, though the publisher previously has taken actions against pirate
BBSes through the Business Software Alliance of which WordPerfect Corp.
is a founding member.

Current Discussions From Ozark Net
----------------------------------
compiled by C. Brown
Hi there folks. Is it just me, or has it been an incredibly long
week? You know the feeling; there just aren't enough days in the week to
do all the things you want to do. I love to keep current with all the
news from the computer world, and especially the Joplin bbs world, but
there just doesn't seem to be enough time.
Luckily, Ozark Net offers me the ability to catch up with the rest of
the computer world, and especially the Joplin bbs world, quickly.
I recently re-read some of those long, rambling preambles that I've
been putting at the top of this column. I don't know about you, but I'm
getting kind of tired of them. If you've got an opinion, why not leave me
a note on one of the bbs services? I can be found on PC Depot, LANStar,
Deep Space 9, Cedarhurst Ridge and, for the time being, Eagle's Nest. I
can also be reached on the Powder Puff Palace. So c'mon, let me know what
you think.
Well, it looks like this is turning into one of those long intros that
I'm getting so tired of. So, let's get on with the purpose of this
column... the talk that goes on every week on Ozark Net.

Ann Kemp gives Chance more information about fetus implants and other
things:
From: Ann Kemp
To: Chance Hester
Subj: ARF
Actually, I think they can remove a fetus from one woman and
implant it into another. The problem there is that the pressure is on
infertile couples to be able to produce a child out of their own sperm and
ova, and anyone else's contribution constitutes failure on the part of the
couple. The most practical thing of all would be if there were not these
ridiculous restrictions on adoptions now requiring that the adoptive
couple be of the same race as the prospective child. If America is to
become a melting pot, would that not be an easy way of augmenting the
process, to require instead that adoptive children be of different races
from their adoptive parents?
Anyway, Chance, just because you're a man doesn't mean you
shouldn't have an opinion on the subject of abortion. That is a stupid
feminist argument which is an example of the pendulum swinging in an
opposing direction, that is, for many centuries women have been sold to
men and forced to bear children which then became the men's property to
dispose of in marriage and the workplace as he pleased. Instead of
attempting to find a compromise, women in this century have fought back
by claiming total owmership of the children for themselves. Neither
position is healthy, but if men continue in their present attitude, i.e.
children are the sole property and therefore responsibility of women,
eventually men will lose all their parental rights, and I foresee
female-operated kibbutz-style day cares becoming the normal nursery
setting. What do you think about that?

Stephen Currier compares FDR to Moses:
From: Stephen Currier
To: Robert Petersen
Subj: Re: TWEEN_TALK
I wouldn't go so far as to say he was as bad as Hitler,I think
the early Ayotola Komeini is more like it. Started out to legislate
equality for all people, got angry at the opposition, undoubtedly Lincoln
liked good whisky, that helped, and when he got angry he got into the
war with Davis, and all of it could have been avoided if he'
woul have just used the law enforcement defense instead of the weapons.
Komeini did manage to win the revolt in Iraq against an lous of an
shah with minimmal violence. Its the people hating and unnecessary
executions, fuedery, and involvements in terrorism that are mistakes of
evident some dependance on anger, and arguement he'd developed after
or during the revolt,or maybe it was the mental effects of the
acute indegistion illness komeini was suffering from.
In deciding on a candidate its always wise to take into
consideration-during election times-the mental character,and
dedication to solving problems intelligently without harming the
gains of the people,or resorting to uses of violence in situations
which could be solved by peacful means. Those two above cases
are examples why.LBJ is a 3rd example.
There are also going to occur situations in which civil solutions
won't work-at least until the days of total world disarmament.WWII is
an example, definitely FDR is right in ordering the declaration of War
against the 3rd Reich.Definitely, and wisely I think,he as do we reguarded
WWII as the least of his and our nation's accomplishments of
that era. The major accomplishment are the domestic programs, and
progress towards-as I said before-an civilized system of government that
serves God and the people in all situations, that no law abiding
human life is ever ostracizeable, suppressable,or in any forced to
resortto crime to survive, and we're greater than both the
Roman and Athenian governments as result.I am also add we're also
a government thats greater than the Mosaic government of Isreal-and
that was the greatest government the Middle East ever had. I think
if Moses were alive today,he'd be impressed,FDR's works are very
good, and are actually more just and right with the laws of God
than were Moses first code of law. The nearest thing in Moses
rough version of law was the Jubilee,FDR's new Deal is greater than
Moses Jubilee because it has not the unjustice of limit in years of
application. An improovement Moses himself would agree with.
Most of Moses works of law are intended towards perfect justice and
perfect individuality tailor made for the Isrealis, not the whole
world,at least not beyond that of being more than the logistics model
of toleratable law codes.
Those ae important factors to realize because we all have secured
rights to choice of working for ourselves or an employer(and the choice
of employer),guaranteed unemployment insurance during the time of job
search between jobs,income if disabled,retirement
and educational financing, etc. All government which agrees with our
nation's logistics,not Asians,or some Europeans.Thats very important
for any candidate(democrat or Repulbican) to agree with or the
voters are vote for the other man or abstend and look and pray for
a civilized man to replace he who didn't have the intellect or
courage to agree with FDR,and the rights of all the public.

Stephen Currier talks about peace by civilized means of law:
From: Stephen Currier
To: Robert Petersen
Subj: Re: TWEEN_TALK
One of the recent good examples of what we're discussing on successful
alternative solutions to situations of attempted sedition
is that of the Russian Dispute. Its finally being resolved, their lifting
the barracade on the Parlament building, those there are stack their
weapons in stacks on the floors, and both electric and telephone power
is going to be restored. Plus the majority of the regional governments
have now agreed formed an unamimous agreement with Yeltsin to hold
simultaneous elections for parlament offices and Presidential office.
Good real proof we human beings have the intellect to solve
disputes in peace by civilized means of law,not by force of
war.Undeniably it was Lincoln's own anger,and Congress's in the 1860s
that resulted in the civil war, they had a good advisor,Allen Pinkerton,if
they'd heeded his advice they'd have arrested both
Harryman, and Rothchilds, and would have raided Davis hq,and arrested the
Davis clique on charges of conspired sedition, and conspired
treasons with Harryman and Rothchild to have purposefully started an
war of intent to have made economic ruin of the Southern and
Northern U S economies and Communities. The Lincoln at that time,if
I remember my studies rightly, had reguarded all that as unmanly, and
the very ones guilty as having been too important to have had arrested
at that time,etc.

Elaine Edwards sets Ray Dauphinais straight about women and their role
in society:
From: Elaine Edwards
To: Ray Dauphinais
Subj: IMHO
-=> Quoting Ray Dauphinais to Ann Kemp <=-
RD> The male, hunter/gatherer, had to be ready for any receiptive female
RD> he happen by. Again, a base instinct. She presented, he sowed the
RD> seed. The female being smaller and the male being meaner, caused the
RD> female to present in a way that the male would find appealing.
RD> (Another story on why human women developed breasts.) Hence, the
RD> seductive nature of woman. The woman merely found the right switch to
RD> flip and 'light up' the male.
Hehehehe...this whole story is hilarious! I guess I've been married
too long...Way back when (not quite to the prehistoric age), before I
got married, most of the males flipped their own switches just fine,
and were already "lit" up and looking for ways to "heat up" the female
(going back to the "iron" and "lightbulb" theory)! I remember thinking
they were "prehistoric" at the time, but I guess I was wrong! The
picture that comes to mind of the "mean" prehistoric male is one of the
"Me man, carry big club, drag female to cave by hair" variety. Thanks
for the laugh!
RD> Sexuality is still one of the strongest forces in nature. No matter
RD> what we do nothing (in our liftime at least) will change that. No
RD> law, secular or divine, can make us different. We are making great
RD> strides toward equality between the sexes, but until nature deems it
RD> 'safe' to reduce that instinct we must learn to understand sex for
RD> what and why it is.
Well, maybe, nature IS trying to reduce that instinct, or at least
"curb" the appetite! In addition to the possibility of "unwanted"
pregnancies, there have always those "dreaded" sexually transmitted
diseases: Gonorrhea, Syphilis, Herpes, and now "AIDS"! What has to
happen next...death by contact?
IMHO, the basic instinct for procreation has been supplanted by the
desire for self gratification. This changes the concept from one of
"natural" instinct, to one of intellectual pursuit, however low the
intellect. As an intellectual pursuit, anyone who is cognizant will
recognize that nature has thrown up many signs of hazard, with DEAD END
(AIDS) becoming common. The intellect recognizes the hazards of
communicable diseases and should overide base instincts. It is obvious
that those of low intellect, aka pseudo-intellectuals, fail to observe
these hazard signs. IMHO a moral code, Judeo-Christian or others, is an
integral part of an above average intellect. A moral code or ethic will
overide basic instincts, as will cowardice, since cowardice (according
to Mark Twain) is the surest guard against temptation. Temptation is the
exercise of base instincts for self gratification.
RD> Looking back over this I not sure I answered your question. I guess
RD> ya'll are blamed because men write the books.
What a "wimpy" reason to come up with!

Ann Kemp adds her voice to Elaine's concerning women. Watch out Ray!
From: Ann Kemp

Subj: IMHO
I am not an evolutionist, but I think that for many males and
females that pattern exists today. To me, however, the exceptional trait
of the human race is its refusal to adopt any standard mating pattern.
We are capable of forming all sorts of erotic/emotional attachments,
compared to other animal groups, whose mating habits can be charted along
specific lines. What I do not understand is why, then, it is assumed
that all females have this special self-control mechanism which all males
lack. Your theory does not explain this.

Greg Sharkey and Stephen Currier debate about the value of Abraham Lincoln:
From: Greg Sharkey

During a stroll in the cosmos, Stephen Currier spoke to Greg Sharkey
about Re: TWEEN_TALK:
SC> I totally disagree, there is nothing Lincoln or those of our greater
SC> Presidents who came before did to make certain of the common rights
SC> of all in business, and life, but FDR and Theadore Roosevelt have and
SC> of thier legislations the nation's union and rights are safe.
What? What about all of the things Washington and Franklin and
Jefferson and Madison did BEFORE they were even presidents? (yes, I know
Franklin was not a pres) And there was the era of good feelings under
Jackson, and, of course, the first Republican president, Lincoln.
Granted, Lincoln was going along with the popular sentiments when he
freed the slaves, but the Emancipation Proclamation >was< passed under
his administration. Theodore stood firm in his beliefs, even though I
would say his biggest mistake was backing Taft, who was a failure. And
we all know FDR's crimes.
SC> I do not like hatred,or the cruelty that developed of Lincoln's
SC> taxation policies during the civil war
I have never heard >anything< about this. Lincoln's taxation policies?
You'll have to go into more detail, as this is some strange unchartered
territory.
SC> I don't believe the civil
SC> war was even necessary to solve that dispute.I think the
SC> civil war happened only because those on Lincoln's side and Lincoln
SC> himself got angry, and didn't think dedicatedly or agree with civil
SC> and legal ways to have solved the dispute and threat of sedition
SC> without war.
So now you are blaming Lincoln for winning the war, freeing the slaves,
and generally making the country whole again? The southern states broke
the law by SECEDING in the first place and they attacked Fort Sumter.
SC> Lincoln was too soft on Asian and European monopolists...
SC> ...
SC> deleted for brevity
SC> ...
SC> aren't that much improoved today,but we are,we're a much greater much
SC> wiser and are the stronger nation.
SC> Thats a long parapgraph, but its not unreadable.I no way
SC> is there anything wrong with what TR and FDR have done to strengthen
SC> the economic control of we the American peoples of Eur-Asian and
SC> other descent.Understand, and thats how it legally is,
SC> legally is,and not that any that would otherwise can legally do
SC> to ruin it.
This all began by you saying that FDR was our greatest president. I
disagreed, and stated why. I am not sure what happened in the middle
there, but it is obvious to me, that is not what you really wanted to
say. I do agree that the Asian culture is different than ours, but I am
not sure where you went. I believe the U.S.A. is the best country on
the planet bar none. FDR weakened us immensely, but we are still the
best. FDR tried to circumvent the Constitution every way he could to
destroy us. I like TR, and said so, but the rest of this message is
just Greek to me. Sorry.

At this point, I'd just like to bring you a bit of news about
something I mentioned a few weeks ago. I had mentioned that, in this
column, I routinely use posts from anyone who asks or answers questions
regardless of whether or not I agree with the person's opinions or
comments on other subjects. This week Kevin Martin of SuperSystem WBBS
asked, if somewhat rudely, that Net 286 Gazette no longer include posts by
him in our publication. Alright Kevin, you've got it (at least in this
column). But I seem to remember a time, not so long ago, that you
complained bitterly that you "thought" we would not print your posts. Then
you complained that we would not print your posts "in their entirety."
Then you complained that we might use your posts "out of context."
For my part, I have endeavored to make sure that none of these
circumstances occurred. I think that, since you can't kvetch about
misrepresentation, out-of-context quotes, or other types of journalistic
booby-traps, you have decided to play the spoiled-sport and dangle the
semi-divine carrot, the all important WORD OF KEVIN, as if we will be any
the worse for not being able to use it.
I am happy to announce that I do not intend to ignore posts answered
by others regarding SuperSystem WBBS. This is because I have remembered
one thing that Kevin seems to have forgotten: The user is the all-
important part of this equation. Because of this, my only consideration
in using a post has been to ask myself a question: Is this information
that someone will find useful? As long as the answer is yes, I have no
problem with using a post from anyone.
Unfortunately, we are not the ones who will be shortchanged by your
tantrum. Your callers and possible future callers are the ones who will
not hear the hints, tips and assorted information that you often post here
on Ozark Net.
It is nice, though, to see you and yours spending so much time and
effort here on Ozark Net. Say "Hello" to Dave for me. I enjoyed talking
to him at the JCS meeting.
See that folks, I cut down on the stuff in the beginning of the
column, but added it to the end. Sorry about that.
Well, that's all the space we have for this week folks. The
JCS discussion will be back next time around. Next week I'll have more
info from Ozark Net so be ready to kick back, relax and listen to what
they are saying when...

I am running Telemate 4.12. The problem usually happens when I am using the
mouse to edit an entry or to abort a number after it shows busy, but it has
also happened at other times, such as when I was writing one of the
messages a couple of days ago.

Ok, Like you said, you were using your mouse? It may be a bug with
Telemate, I've found a few with the older versions..or as Kevin pointed out
(inadvertently) you may have a memory resident virus...Try VSCAN108.ZIP.
I think you can get it at The Yellow Crecent Inn, or if not, check with
me...and I'll make sure you get a copy...

You don't by any chance have an IBM PS/2 do you? Linda Murray has the same
problem. I'm just wondering if it could be a hardware problem with the
PS/2's...
